When Gandhiji participated in his first Congress Session, he took up the work of cleaning the toilets and along with him, hundreds of other people joined in. Remember at that point, Indians practiced untouchability openly. Gandhiji equated the process of cleaning with “Training in practicing Equality”. The Swachh Bharat Mission was launched on Gandhi Jayanti (October 2nd, 2014) by the Government of India to clean the streets, roads and infrastructure of the country. It aims to eliminate, among others, open defecation, manual scavenging and focuses on awareness generation.
Filth, sewage and diseases are common in India; the problem is both psychological and social. Sweeping is considered socially undesirable and living in squalid conditions acceptable. The Swachh Bharat Mission aims to address these issues at a psycho-social level and hence becomes important for both the Prelims and the Mains.
Swachh Bharat Mission is not the only scheme that is targeted at sanitation and cleanliness. This lecture will look at all the preceding schemes; both that focused on rural as well as urban areas. This lecture will also look into the recently launched ‘Namami Gange’ scheme that envisages cleaning of Ganga in a comprehensive manner.
We believe that our Current Affairs Lecture Series can help IAS aspirants prepare for CSE in a manner which the UPSC examination requires. Please note that for any further queries or to discuss how to align your preparation strategy as per UPSC requirements (also with respect to CSAT), please feel free to write us on targetias@byjusclasses.com
